Let’s get the business out of the way before we get to the fun part: Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, is heavily involved in virtual worlds through its Metaverse unit, Reality Labs.
However, its investment has yet to pay off, with the Metaverse company reporting collective losses of more than $40 billion.
Despite the loss, investors are optimistic about Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s long-term bet on Metaverse, sending the stock up 7% after hearing Zuckerberg’s argument on the Meta Q2 2023 earnings call.
Wall Street seems convinced by their arguments, supported by Meta’s improved overall business performance as the platform saw its revenue grow in the second quarter. Zuckerberg aims to cover Metaverse’s costs with the growth of Meta’s family of apps, which has raised $2 billion, more than half of what it needs to cover a $3.7 billion loss from Reality Labs.
I can’t guarantee you that I’ll be right about this bet. I think the world is going in that direction.”
The Meta CEO believes that a comprehensive version of the Internet will become the norm. He backed up this statement with examples from trends like smart glasses and immersive communication:
Today there are 1 billion or 2 billion people who have glasses. I think in the future, they’re all going to be smart glasses. And with the amount of time we spend on TVs and computers, I think it’s going to be more immersive and VR-like in the future.
Following the launch of Threads — over which enthusiasm faded after a while but has been rekindled — Meta will reportedly release AI chatbots with human-like personalities, with a focus on user retention.
A new blockchain game is being created for all text-based role-playing game lovers. Alchemy: Battle for Ankhos will take place on Discord, using the platform’s familiar environment to host battles in a fantasy world.
Although it’s not an entirely new concept, bringing crypto and AI together certainly makes things interesting, with examples such as Wordle, Pokémon, and Guess the Song.
The art style immediately evokes memories of Darkest Dungeon – another turn-based RPG with roguelike mechanics. The four developers are building the game with support from generative AI tools including OpenAI and Midjourney. The Alchemy: Battle for Ankhos team uses Midjourney to create the art, while OpenAI gives custom behavior to the NPCs.

The project, which was one of five winners in Solana’s NFT Showdown, will allow players to create their own assets from an in-game menu without any blockchain knowledge. According to the game’s creative director, Alex Finden, nearly every asset earned or purchased in the game will be optionally usable.
Professional Dota 2 player Eric “Tofu” Engel, who has won over $400,000 in various eSports tournaments, recently expressed interest in the Web3 stage.
Short for “electronic sports”, eSports is a growing industry, with an audience of over half a billion people on the global stage in 2022, with revenue expected to grow to $1.87 billion by 2025. With these figures, it’s no surprise that Web3 players are vying to enter the space.

Crypto gaming startup Ultra also heard the call and announced the launch of an eSports tournament platform built on its own blockchain network called Ultra Arena. One of the oldest and most popular free-to-play web3 games, Gods Unchained has made it onto my playlist with its recent release on the Epic Games Store.
The turn-based card game sets itself apart from leading players of the genre with its Web3 elements, presenting the cards as tradable NFTs and hosting a player-focused community marketplace.
Along with cosmetic items such as card backs and trinkets, cards can be bought and sold in the marketplace, giving players true ownership. There are also card packs that can be purchased using GODS tokens.

The games generally have beautiful animations and a great art style, but lag in gameplay and menus often plagues the graphics. Gods Unchained draws “inspiration” from classics of the card game genre, specifically Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone.
The usual mana, strength, and health mechanics are all there, including the inclusion of “gods” that are like Hearthstone’s “Heroes”. The gods have their own abilities, which you can choose from at the start of the match.
After booting up the game and trying to play the first of three missions in the tutorial, a bug appeared that prevented me from completing the mission, so I decided to hit “accept” — the in-game button — to surrender. For – restart the mission.
Went back to the game menu and I was given the full award for the first mission. So, I thought, “Huh, maybe this was the last step of the mission and the game registered it as completed.”
Then came the second mission, which was completed without any problem. Another bug appeared in the third mission. I tried waiting, clicking on every possible option and, with nothing else to do, I had to accept. In front of me was a menu with closing prizes.
After that, I played some casual and ranked games and all went smoothly without any issues.
Lastly, some of the work in the game could be used. It doesn’t provide the seamless experience of Hearthstone or introduce new mechanics like Marvel Snap. Considering that it’s been five years since its initial release, and some of the bugs in the tutorial mission haven’t been fixed, it seems that the developers aren’t really concerned about the user experience. Hopefully, they can fix these issues in their upcoming mobile releases.
If you are a fan of this genre and a crypto enthusiast, it is worth a look. Otherwise, you’ll be better off playing Magic: The Gathering, Hearthstone, Marvel Snap, or Legends of Runeterra.
