Hyundai Motor America reported sales of 65,046 vehicles in the United States in August, up one percent from a year ago. The year-on-year result was 526,186 units (up 12 percent year-on-year).
Meanwhile, sales of Hyundai’s e-GMP-based all-electric cars – the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 – are growing rapidly.
In August, the company sold 5,235 Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 in the US, an increase of nearly 245 percent year-over-year and 8.0 percent of total volume. This result is very impressive and even better is the second one after July.
On top of this come sales of the Hyundai Kona Electric (for which figures are not available as it is counted with the ICE Kona) and some plug-in hybrid models. The South Korean maker said only that the Kona Electric grew 653 percent year-over-year, the Santa Fe PHEV was up 55 percent and the Tucson PHEV was up 150 percent.
Everything rechargeable seems to be on the rise for Hyundai. The Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 both got their second-highest monthly results – 3,572 and 1,663, respectively.
Hyundai BEV sales last month:
So far this year, more than 28,000 Hyundai Ioniq 5/Ioniq 6 have been sold in the US (up 63 percent year-over-year).
Hyundai BEV Sales YTD in 2023:
- Hyundai Ioniq 5: 21,348 (up 24% year-over-year)
- Hyundai Ioniq 6: 6,653 (New)
- Hyundai Kona Electric: N/A
- Total Ioniq households: 28,001 (up 63% year-on-year) and 5.3% share
For context, through the 12 months to 2022, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 totaled 22,982 sales, accounting for about 3.2 percent of the total volume.
Unfortunately, the official figures do not include sales results for other all-electric or plug-in hybrid models, as they are counted alongside conventional or non-rechargeable hybrids.
The hydrogen fuel cell model – Hyundai Nexo – registered 18 units last month (the same number as a year ago). So far this year, 157 have been delivered, which is 51 percent less than a year ago.
