King steps in for sporty tournament, long a staple of Queen Elizabeth’s summer calendar
On Saturday, the 74-year-old monarch attended the Bremer Royal Highland Gathering in Bremer, Scotland. The festive annual event of traditional sports doubles up as a proud display of Scottish heritage and is just a short walk from Balmoral Castle, where the monarch is continuing the tradition of Queen Elizabeth’s private summer holiday retreat.
The outing marked the final milestone of Charles’ first year as king, as it was his first Bremer Games. Queen Elizabeth died aged 96 at her beloved Balmoral on September 8, 2022, and her eldest son and heir apparent is expected to spend the first anniversary quietly and privately next Friday.
King Charles attended the spirited sporting event with his wife, Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence.
He wore traditional Scottish dress including a kilt, knee socks and sporran. Their green, blue and red tartan was designed by the Scottish Tartans Authority earlier this year.
A lot has changed since the Bremer Games last year, which Charles attended with Queen Camilla (then known as the Duchess of Cornwall) and Princess Anne. All three stood up from their front row seats and burst into laughter as they watched September 3, 2022. It was a big year for the competition, as the 2020 and 2021 Games were canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
