The next ‘Made by Google’ event was announced earlier this week digitally on the Pixel Store, with no details on what would be unveiled. Google documents published soon after the announcement revealed more details about the expected Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro handsets.

The details come from the always reliable FCC. Following Google’s confirmation of its October 4 launch event, listings for a range of Pixel models were published by the US regulator. Seven variants were listed: four for the Pixel 8 and three for the Pixel 8 Pro.

When different models come with different wireless communication methods they require separate listings.

With the four Pixel 8 listings, the handset options to include mmWave 5G, along with different combinations of LTE bands. Missing from the Pixel 8 listing is support for Ultra Wideband, the short-range high-bandwidth standard that’s starting to appear in high-end smartphones and tablets.

With regard to the Pixel 8 Pro, we are likely looking at an international version of the Pixel 8 Pro and two US models with and without mmWave 5G connectivity. All three Pixel 8 Pro models (unlike the Pixel 8) come with UWB.

The inclusion of UWB on the 8 Pro would make for a welcome addition to the Pixel tablet, which also comes with the technology. Google is testing new media sharing software that will allow users to ‘throw’ music from their Pixel handsets to Pixel tablets, allowing media to move seamlessly between the two devices.

As mentioned, Google is holding a launch event in early October. Given that FCC certification happens closer to the retail release of a product, we can assume that the two new Pixel smartphones will go on sale soon after the launch event.

Now read about the latest technology Google plans to include in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro…
