One Piece just debuted on Netflix, and if you’ve finished it, you know it’s headed towards more source material pulled from the endless manga/anime. But whether or not we actually get a chance to see that in Season 2 remains to be seen.
While some studios, when making something with a bigger budget, may reduce costs before launch (Amazon’s Rings of Power) Netflix… doesn’t. They’re notorious for squeezing out second and third seasons, and nothing is safe.
The good news, however, is that One Piece is off to a strong start, not only getting rave reviews from critics and fans (let’s be honest, Netflix doesn’t really care that much) but more importantly, It is that it debuted at #1 on the first day. Its launched on Netflix.
This is the best start you could hope for, although given that Netflix has yet to release actual viewing hours, we’re at the mercy of the chart’s ranking order which is telling us very little. I would say the rest of the list has limited competition right now. #2 A funny documentary about living as long as possible. #3 is a British series set in Spain that only briefly topped the list. The rest are reality shows or things that peaked a long time ago. Still, it’s definitely better than One Piece debuting at #2 or #3.

Netflix
It is not clear that the source material is not an issue. Netflix could make a hundred seasons of the show if they wanted to, as the anime has over a thousand episodes. It is more important to eliminate what should not be filmed and decide what should be filmed.
Of course that’s just viewership numbers, and there are enough viewers to warrant One Piece’s reportedly insanely high budget. The other complicating factor here is the strike, as in the past, such strikes have killed shows that may have been renewed for one reason or another. Of course, Netflix is one of the major streaming services being accused of underpaying its show creators, and so far they haven’t made an agreement with writers and actors to change that.
A show as large as One Piece can typically run for at least 15-18 months between seasons. But now? It will probably take at least two years, and only then it will be renewed. It’s definitely a strong start, but we’ll have to see how long it stays there, and Netflix reports viewing hours after one week, and again next month. I’d be shocked if we heard anything earlier.
