I loved going back to school. Although I was sad that summer was over, I loved the idea of new books and school supplies and shopping with my mom.
The Cybercrime Support Network (CSN) says that these days, as millions of people shop online, scammers are engaging in back-to-school scams like never before.
CSN says, “As back-to-school season approaches, many families are preparing for the new academic year.” “Amidst the excitement and preparations, it is important to remain alert to a growing threat that targets parents and students alike: back-to-school scams.”
Here are the top five scams and how you can avoid them:
- Fake Online Store: Scammers create fake websites that appear to sell popular school supplies, textbooks, or clothing at deep discounts.
- Phishing Email: Cyber criminals send emails pretending to be from educational institutions, asking recipients to update their personal information or login credentials. Fraudsters use social media platforms to promote fake back-to-school deals or gifts. By clicking on these links, users may be exposed to phishing attempts or to malicious websites.
- Technical Support Scams: The scammers pose as technical support agents and claim that students’ computers have viruses or technical problems.
- Textbook Rental Scams: College students looking for affordable textbook rentals can fall prey to fake rental websites that charge rental fees but never ship the books.
- Scholarship and Financial Aid Scams: Scammers present themselves as organizations offering scholarships or financial aid, and ask for upfront fees or personal information in order to process applications.
My strict rule for your safety: Ignore unsolicited or online offers. Do your own shopping – and homework.
